Jeremy Ricci
Flat Belly DW
This is Jeremy Ricci writing… otherwise known as
"FBDW." On nearly any course we play you can typically
find me by the over-whelmingly ingenuine "Nice Shot
Jeremy" jeers from the group. As the youngest member
of the DW squad, I naturally have to endure endless harrassment
and ridicule. It wasn't always this way for me…. I
was once your every day weekend player, I'd take a tee time
whenever possible and wherever possible. Little did I know
there was a group out there that refused to play before
10am, created their own rules on the course and was desparately
in need of a "Ringer." This is that story.
I moved down to the DC area from NYC in December of 2005
to start a new job in Bethesda. I moved down there not knowing
anyone, not really having a clue as to what I was going
to do with myself. All I knew was there was plenty of great
golf in this area and if nothing else… I would spend
my free time doing what I loved most. During my first summer
in DC, I went to Whiskey Creek to play a round with some
co-workers. I remember being 2 groups behind this rambunctious
foursome that was apparently having the time of their lives
while terrorizing this scenic sanctuary of the sport. 2
weeks later, I was invited by my boss to join a friend of
his (Poho or WDW) for a round. When I arrived at the course,
I found myself face to face with the very same group of
guys I had watched 2 weeks earlier. I said to myself…
"this is going to be an interesting afternoon."
Over the next 2 years, I developed close bonds and friendships
with this amazing group of guys and most of their significant
others by association. They welcomed me into the group very
quickly and didn't even seem to mind donating their hard
earned money to me on a weekly basis. Despite every effort
on their part to make my day as difficult as possible, I
kept coming back for more. In fact, I believe the last round
I played with these guys, I was forced to tee off from behind
the green of the previous hole, facing backwards and I was
only allowed to hit a sandwedge…. left-handed.
After a brief stint back in NYC for a few months and my
recent marriage, my wife and I have decided to put our relocation
on hold for a while until the economy gets a bit better.
At the very least, I am looking forward to another season
of golf and jokes with the guys… I'm sure the little
break I've had has restored some of their confidence. All
the better to take more of their money come Spring.
The reigning champion for the 2nd year…..
